| Position Profile The Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism is seeking a new director for the Arkansas Tourism division. This position provides leadership and direction for a state agency that is shaping Arkansas’s future by demonstrating exemplary stewardship of the state’s resources and sharing these resources with the world. The Tourism Division Director reports directly to the Secretary of the Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism. Division Profile This position is responsible for leading the division in strategically planning the long-range future of the tourism industry. The travel/hospitality niche is among the state’s major economic drivers, employing more than 100,000 Arkansans and representing $7.3 billion in annual sales. Tourism’s job is to promote economic growth within the tourism industry. Responsibilities Lead in the strategic planning process to set short and long-range goals of the division. Oversee teambuilding among staff and vendors to achieve division goals. Lead and establish overall administrative standards for the division to include setting goals and objectives and directing workflow procedures. Identify, coordinate, and implement projects/programs to improve the quality and efficiency of the division. Identify service and operational problems and issues and provide project support and advice to management. Supervise and direct activities of staff and programs by making work assignments, establishing deadlines, providing instruction, reviewing work performed, and evaluating employee performance. Coordinate with section managers to oversee section budgets, timekeeping, purchasing, and other daily operational matters, implementing policies and procedures to eliminate liability issues. Coordinate/manage internal relationships with other divisions in the department and with the State Parks, Recreation and Travel Commission. Maintain external relationships with other agencies, individuals and organizations to include a management/oversight role with agency vendors. Oversee the division’s marketing and grant programs. Present programs to civic organizations, governmental agencies, and the public to increase awareness of the mission and function of the division. Represent the division at various state, national, and international travel/tourism association functions. Represent the division on various committees, boards, and task forces as needed. Respond to inquiries from state, Federal, and local government representatives. Skills: Knowledge of the tourism and hospitality industry. Knowledge of marketing and destination management. Knowledge of organizational management. Knowledge of budgeting and budget administration. Ability to interface with public officials, business leaders, and the general public. Ability to deliver the division’s goals within department and state parameters. Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the work of subordinates. Ability to adapt to constantly shifting priorities and managing a wide range of projects. Ability to coordinate numerous types of activities involving supervisory level personnel. Ability to provide assistance to both departmental personnel and the general public. Salary/Benefits This position provides a competitive starting salary of $108,110 and excellent benefits including group health and life insurance, state retirement plan, and a tax deferred compensation plan, as well as generous sick, annual and holiday paid leave.
